Where steps go

Steps where the yard needs them

  • Sidewalk to the front walk

A few wide steps up a front-yard slope to the walk and the door.

  • Up a side or back slope

Steps that replace a worn path across a grassy hill.

  • Through a retaining wall

Steps built into a block wall, so a terraced yard is easy to get around.

  • Patio to lawn

A step or two down from a raised patio to the yard.

How it goes

How steps go in

  1. Free quote

Request a quote online, or call or text (502) 915-1364. Tell us where the steps go and roughly how high the slope is.

  2. Measure the rise

The height and length of the slope set how many steps there are and how deep each tread is.

  3. Dig and base

The slope is cut back and a compacted gravel base goes under the first step.

  4. Build the risers

Block risers go up course by course, with side walls where the slope needs holding back.

  5. Set the treads

Cap stones or pavers are set level on top of each riser to make the treads.

  6. Finish and clean up

Soil and planting are tidied around the new steps, and the work area is cleaned up.

Before you call

Worth thinking about first

None of this has to be decided up front. It just makes the first conversation quicker.

  • How high the slope is

Roughly how far the ground rises from the bottom to the top. A guess is fine.

  • How wide

A narrow path for one person, or wide enough to carry things side by side.

  • Where they start and end

The sidewalk, the drive, a patio or a door, and how the steps meet each one.

  • Block color

Whether the steps should match a wall, a patio or the house.

  • Walls beside them

Whether the slope next to the steps needs a low wall to hold it.

  • Planting along them

Shrubs, groundcover or mulch either side of the steps.

How much do outdoor steps cost?

It depends on how many steps there are, how wide they are and what is around them, so each set is quoted on its own. Quotes are free.

Can steps be built into a retaining wall?

Yes. Retaining walls are one of our main services, and steps can be built through a wall so the slope is easy to walk.

Can you add planting beside the steps?
